What is wrong with dieting?

Anyone who has been on a diet has been through this scenario before. At first it seems to work, the pounds are shed, but then it becomes increasingly difficult to stay trim. What is going wrong?

Canada has a population of 33 million people. 65% of all Canadian men between the ages of 20 and 64 are overweight or obese and 52 % of Canadian women are also suffering with weight issues. Needless to say, more than half of the total adult population are unhappy with their figure. As a result, new diets appear on the market daily but even so the general population is still not losing weight. Why? Well diets simply don’t work, in fact they have a tendency to cause weight gain. The reason for this is the so-called yo-yo effect. You can only achieve your ideal weight and maintain it when you make a long-term nutritional adjustment that is tailor made for your metabolism. The personal nutrition plan created by healthy & active, is a scientifically proven method to help you lose weight and keep it off while optimizing the metabolism.

Nutrition today is often associated with “fat-free carbohydrates” like breads, pasta, potatoes, rice and soft-drinks. Important Vitamins, minerals and trace elements are often lacking in these foods. This leads to so many common ailments which are caused by poor nutrition.

Paradoxically vitamin and mineral supplements that are taken to try and balance a poor diet often don’t get these ailments under control. A dose of chemically made supplements and medication may reduce the symptoms but cannot cure the cause. The food industry supports the misleading belief that fat-free carbohydrates are healthy. In order to thicken these low-in-nutrient foods it is necessary to add more starch to achieve the right consistency. This causes weight gain and the nutritional value, if any at all, is negligible. Hormone research has proven that it is not lack of exercise or fats that block our metabolism, but rather the “fattening- up” with simple (fat-free) carbohydrates.

Explain the “metabolic type”.

Experts are unanimous that the “right nutrition“ is very important for good health. Unfortunately, experts cannot agree what is the “right nutrition”.

In looking for the right nutrition for everyone, an important aspect has been ignored. Nutritional requirements vary greatly from one person to another. Just as we differ in terms of skin colour, eye colour, size, how we look, build and physical type, we also have differences in our metabolism and in the way our metabolism processes food. There is no universal form of nutrition which is suitable for everybody. Each person is unique and requires optimal nutrition which suits his or her metabolism for health and vitality.

We can ascertain your metabolic type by conducting an individual metabolic analysis. This is a result of indicators of the autonomic nervous system and metabolic rate.

Autonomic Nervous System

The autonomic nervous system consists of 2 branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Both subconsciously control many bodily functions such as blood pressure, heartbeat, the immune system etc. The autonomic nervous system has a considerable influence on metabolic balance. Different characteristics of the autonomic nervous system result in individual differences in metabolism. The right individual nutrition can restore the balance in the autonomic nervous system.

Metabolic Rate

Dr. George Watson from the University of Southern California was the first to identify the link between the rate at which energy is burned and different metabolic types.

With people who have a fast metabolic rate, their cells create energy too quickly, and too slowly by the cells of those who have a slow metabolic rate.  In order to restore metabolic balance, the right nutrition is important for every metabolic type. To slow down a fast metabolic rate, nutrition has to be rich in fat and protein and low in carbohydrate. On the other hand, someone with a slow metabolic rate requires more carbohydrate and less protein and fat. Different metabolic types (derived from differing rates and the autonomic nervous system) process nutrition differently. The composition of food (fat, protein and carbohydrate) is of great significance for individual metabolic types.
